Woodworking has been a part of human civilization since before history.
Many people of today work with wood in the home as a hobby. For that
reason, information on wood carving supplies, wood craft supplies, and
other woodworking tools are provided.
There are many types of wood which are used within the home. These
range from oak to pine and even to bamboo. Of course, bamboo is actually
a grass as opposed to a wood type.
Historically, the types of wood which people have used for woodworking
will fall into three categories:
•Hardwood – This term is used to described wood which comes
from broadleaf or angiosperm trees. In other words, the wood comes from
trees which flower. These generally have a very tight grain as well
as a harder density than softwoods. However, some hardwoods are softer
than certain softwoods, while some softwoods are harder than certain
hardwoods. Examples of hardwood types include oak, beech, ash, maple,
cherry, teak, and mahogany.
•Softwood – The trees that this wood comes from are coniferous,
meaning cone and needle-bearing plants. Examples of these include pine,
yew, redwood, fir, hemlock, larch, and cedar.
•Manmade wood – Materials which fall under this category
include plywood and MDF. Plywood is created from sheets of wood veneer,
or slices of wood that are usually thinner than three millimeters. The
veneers, or plies, are glued together with the grains positioned at
right angles for extra strength. MDF stands for “Medium-density
fiberboard.” It is created by taking fibers from softwood and
combining them with wax and a resin binder. By applying high temperature
and pressure, this mix is then transformed into panels.
