How do I care for my wood?
This all depends on the type of finish that was used on
your wood.
For example:
Hard Lacquers and Varnishes:
These are usually useable for all kinds of furniture—such woof
fragrant often takes the most ware and tear.
When you have these types of finishes the furniture can normally withstand
small spills such as wine or coffee if quickly tended to. The surface
is cleaned best with a very soft cloth. A paste wax can be used if you
want extra shine .
Oil Finishes:
Regular dusting with a lint free soft cloth can keep your furniture
looking new. Do not use feather dusters, as these may scratch the surface.
Small scratches can be buffed out using the finest grade (0000) steel
wool and gently rubbing with the grain, then applying a coat of oil
or wax. If the wood appears dull or dry, try rubbing a small amount
of Howard's Feed-n-Wax or other wooden furniture polish into the surface
with a soft papertowel or dry cloth. Do not let excess oil or wax sit
on the surface.
Hellac/French Polishes:
This is a very elegant finish. For this particular kind of wooden furniture,
you will want nothing but professional maintenance. Despite its beauty,
however, there is a downside. Hellac/French polish requires absolutely
no contact with any moisture whatsoever. Kind of like a delicate statuette
or decorative treasure that would be commonly cased behind glass or
another transparent surface to avoid any damage.
Very important general rules:
Do not keep your wood furniture in direct sunlight—this could
cause discoloration. And any extreme humidity and / or heat could possibly
warp the wood surface.
No matter what kind of wood furniture you have, you should immediately
clean any spills or anything wet at all that may accidentally touch
the surface of the wood.
Never use abrasive cleaners or any other type of cleaner not especially
designed for wood products.
Proper care of your furniture will lead to use and enjoyment for generations.
